Eco Zone Ada Huja, founded on December 14, 1992, by the Palilula Municipal Assembly, has been actively engaged in environmental projects, particularly focusing on biological methods of water purification to rehabilitate the Danube sleeve on the Ada Huja peninsula. This involvement is crucial as Serbia faces significant challenges in environmental protection, including incomplete regulations, inadequate waste processing infrastructure, and insufficient financing mechanisms. Eco Zone Ada Huja has experience addressing these issues through various initiatives and partnerships.
The organisation's thematic competences relevant to the Mystical Danube Project include water purification and waste management, environmental protection and ecosystem safeguarding, and strategic planning and regulation. Eco Zone Ada Huja has expertise in biological methods of water purification and waste management, demonstrated by their projects assessing the impact of NIKOLAOU technology and exploring wastewater treatment methods in Ada Huja. Through the ECOWAVES project (Enhancing Cooperation in Waste Management from Vessels at ADRION Ports), Eco Zone Ada Huja has developed transnational capabilities for addressing environmental issues and safeguarding ecosystems in the Adriatic-Ionian region. The organisation has also contributed to strategic planning initiatives, such as the terrain leveling plan, traffic and technical planning, and regulation of the Ada Huja area.
Implemented projects of Eco Zone Ada Huja include the assessment study of the impact of NIKOLAOU technology on the ecosystem of Ada Huja (2008), the terrain leveling plan on part of the cadastral plot 167/1 K.O. Palilula (2013), the conceptual solution of traffic and technical planning and regulation of the area of Ada Huja (2017), exploring biological methods for wastewater treatment in the Ada Huja Lagoon (2018), and the INTERREG ADRION ECOWAVES project (2020–2022).
Eco Zone Ada Huja will actively participate in all project activities. Their specific contributions include assisting in developing the Strategy for the valorisation of natural and associated intangible cultural heritage in rural and less visited areas. This strategy will inform the action plan for the pilot site, Beljarica. The organisation will bring together and strengthen collaboration with local and national stakeholders to assess the needs of the Beljarica natural habitat. They will facilitate the formation of a working group and a network of local stakeholders to create a specific action plan. Eco Zone Ada Huja will coordinate and implement pilot actions in the Beljarica natural habitat, leveraging their expertise to design and execute effective measures. This area provides a unique perspective, being a rural yet proximate location to the capital city. Additionally, Eco Zone Ada Huja will deliver training and capacity-building programs for local stakeholders through various events, including training sessions for business and soft skills, knowledge exchange, team-building exercises, and festivals.
